Fare evasion in New York City leaves many people frustrated and stressed. Slow trains delay commutes, and rush hour feels more crowded than ever, with packed platforms and impatient riders. On top of that, the MTA raising fares has made people even more annoyed—especially students and working families who rely on the subway every day.
Fare evasion reflects real NYC struggles: long waits, tight schedules, and higher costs. It shows how transportation issues affect daily life and how people live. The system feels overwhelming and unfair. Let’s also talk about the new fare gates hurting people because the technology is so underdeveloped.

CONTEXT
Over the past few years, the MTA has spent billions of dollars trying to stop fare evasion. They’ve even added exit doors that don’t open until 20 seconds later (which honestly has to be illegal). All of this is being done to force people to pay fares—yet trains are still late and unreliable. Sometimes you’re waiting 20+ minutes in the cold, especially for most bus routes.
As MTA public transportation continues, trains and buses keep getting slower while fares get higher. And let’s not even talk about how unsafe the trains have become. There are countless cases of people getting hurt on trains, with police arriving only after the situation is already over or completely out of control. People can easily be injured with no one there to help.
Like… what do you mean kids and teens are riding on top of trains and even driving them? So we’re paying higher fares, but not seeing improved safety or reliability.
CLOSING
At this point, it really feels like the MTA cares more about stopping fare evasion than making sure riders are safe and the system actually works
The MTA needs to do better. We should start a petition or a trend to push the MTA to actually improve their services. We could also come together to fill out the MTA’s surveys or attend board and committee meetings hosted by the MTA. Something has to change—because on top of bad service, we’re also dealing with rude MTA workers. Enough should be enough.
